A product page should help someone decide whether the item fits their needs. SEO supports this by making the page discoverable and understandable. Start with an existing product and check both the visible page and what Google can retrieve. Measure changes without attributing every increase to a single copy edit.
Group related buying needs
Compare three questions: “backpack with laptop compartment” suits a category, “will my 35 × 24 cm laptop fit?” belongs with product dimensions, and “how do I measure my laptop?” may merit a guide. Place each answer where it helps rather than duplicating the product description.
Title and visible heading
Clearly identify the model, product type and a distinguishing feature. Align the H1 with the HTML title. A fictional example is “Model A backpack with 15-inch laptop compartment”. Use only accurate attributes; Google decides which title link to display.
Write decision-supporting descriptions
State external dimensions, the compartment’s internal dimensions, materials, weight and care instructions. Explain limitations such as splash resistance rather than waterproofing. Supplier copy can provide factual information, but check it and add missing buying guidance. Original wording alone does not guarantee rankings.
Make images accessible
Show the front, reverse and relevant details. Describe informative images with alt text based on their visible content. Decorative images can have empty alt text. Use suitable formats and dimensions, and check that labels and important details remain readable on a phone.
Manage URLs carefully
Keep addresses stable and descriptive. If a URL must change, redirect it permanently to the appropriate new address and update internal links, the sitemap and canonical references. Check old links and monitor indexing. A change does not automatically mean permanent loss of earlier rankings.
Reviews and product data
Choose one variant and record its name, price, currency and stock status as shown to shoppers. Compare these with Product or Offer markup and the final checkout. Test the public URL with the Rich Results Test. A valid result does not promise stars or other enhancements on Google.
Internal links
Link from the relevant category to the product and from helpful guides to suitable items. Give links descriptive text. Do not remove unavailable products without a plan; decide whether retaining the page, offering an alternative or removing it best serves customers.
Test mobile usability and performance
Check loading, images, variant selection and the basket on a real phone. Use performance measurements to identify bottlenecks, then check the purchase flow after technical changes. A better score does not prove that every visitor can place an order faster.
Prevent common errors
Avoid hidden keywords, invented reviews and descriptions that do not match the product. Check price, availability and markup after catalogue changes. An error in a shared template can affect many products, so test several variants.
Frequently asked questions
How long should the text be? Long enough to address relevant buying questions without padding. Do stars appear automatically? No. Does every keyword need a page? No; group related intentions and examine real customer questions and page performance.
Measure one product group
Record the change date and compare relevant queries, impressions, clicks and orders. Consider stock, seasonality and advertising alongside those figures. Then improve comparable products. Also read how to write titles and descriptions.
